He came to Yonkers in 2004 to run the South Broadway Business Improvement District which is credited with making successful improvements to the city’s oldest retail corridor. Prior to coming to Yonkers he was Director of Business Development for the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, an organization that promoted economic development in the borough of the Bronx. While in the Bronx he was also Deputy Executive Director for the Bronx Initiative Corporation, an entity that packaged SBA loans. He was also instrumental in helping to establish the Fordham Road BID, the borough’s single largest retail center. Mr. Velez has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from CUNY’s Brooklyn College and a Masters Degree in Urban Affairs from CUNY’s Hunter College. In 2004 he received an Economic Development Finance Professional certificate from the National Development Council.
